All roads lead to New York, and the world is just outside our front door. We are in the heart of historic Chelsea, just minutes away from midtown and the Village. Our Local Guide to Chelsea Google map has many recommendations. 433 West 22nd Street is located on the north (or uptown, or left if you are driving) side of Twenty-second Street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. All of the streets around us, except for Twenty-third Street, are one way so you must approach Twenty-second Street by driving north (uptown) on Tenth Avenue. If you are driving south (downtown) on Ninth or Seventh Avenues, you will have to take a right and go west on Twenty-first Street, then right on Tenth Avenue one short block, and then right again on Twenty-second Street. As they say, two wrongs don’t make a right, but three rights make a left. |

If you are arriving at Amtrak’s Penn Station, exit at Eighth Avenue and Thirty-first Street. It’s a 10–15 minute walk to our house, or a 5 minute/$7 taxi ride (tell the driver “Twenty-second Street between Ninth and Tenth” and look for the metal staircase on the left halfway down the block.)
If you are arriving at John F. Kennedy airport (JFK), you can take the Air Train ($5.00), which stops at various JFK terminals and brings you to Jamaica Station. From there, you can take the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station ($3.50–$8), and follow the directions above. Alternately, you can take the the NYC subway E train ($2.25) from Jamaica Station to 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan (be sure not to get out at 23rd St.-Ely Avenue in Queens); our house is a five-minute walk from the subway If you have a lot of luggage, you may prefer to take a taxi from the airport for a flat rate of $45 plus tolls and tip (about $60).
If you are arriving at LaGuardia airport (LGA), taxi is best option; it should be about $35–$40 with tolls and tip.
If you are arriving at Newark airport (EWR), there is AirTrain service by monorail and NJ Transit to Penn Station ($15.00). From there, follow the directions above. You can also take a taxi from Newark Airport; it’s about $50–$55 with tolls and tip.
Once you’re here, you won’t need a car to get around the city. If you have a rental car, return it; or park your own car at either of the outdoor lots on the west side of Tenth Avenue between 18th and 20th Streets, or the garage in London Terrace on the north side of 23rd Street west of Ninth Avenue.
We are within walking distance to many attractions, and the city is a great place to stroll. There is also an expanding network of bicycle lanes, and bikes are available for rental nearby. Many subway lines stop at 23rd Street: the A, C, E at Eighth Avenue, 1 at Seventh Avenue, F, and PATH at Sixth Avenue give you quick access to the rest of the city and even to New Jersey. The M23 crosstown bus (PDF schedule) goes across 23rd Street in both directions. From this bus you can transfer (for free, if you are using a Metrocard) to buses going up and down all of the avenues. We highly recommend getting a Metrocard. They work on both subways and buses and an unlimited-ride card good for seven days of travel is only 27 dollars.
