Travel Directions

If you are arriving at Amtrak’s Penn Station, exit at Eighth Avenue and 31st Street. It’s a 10–15 minute walk to our house, or a 5 minute/$7-12 taxi ride (tell the driver “22nd Street between Ninth and Tenth” and look for the metal staircase on the left, halfway down the block.)

If you are arriving at John F. Kennedy airport (JFK), you can take the Air Train ($5.00), which stops at various JFK terminals and brings you to Jamaica Station. From there, you can take the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station ($4–$9.50), and follow the directions above. Alternately, you can take the the NYC subway E train ($2.50) from Jamaica Station to 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan (be sure not to get out at 23rd St.-Ely Avenue in Queens); our house is a five-minute walk from the subway. If you have a lot of luggage, you may prefer to take a taxi from the airport for a flat rate of $52 plus tolls and tip (about $70). There is also the SuperShuttle shared van service, which costs $23 (plus $12 for each additional passenger) but it takes 30-60 minutes longer as it drops off passengers around midtown Manhattan.

If you are arriving at LaGuardia airport (LGA), there are several public transit options, but the quickest is the Q70 LTD (Limited) that connects with the E train at Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave. Taking a taxi, will probably be about $50–$60 with tolls and tip. There is also the SuperShuttle shared van service, which costs $17 (plus $12 for each additional passenger) but it can take a while longer as it drops off passengers around midtown Manhattan.

If you are arriving at Newark airport (EWR), there is AirTrain service by monorail that connects with NJ Transit to Penn Station ($12.50). From there, follow the directions above. You can also take a taxi from Newark Airport; it’s about $50–$75 with tolls and tip. There is also the SuperShuttle shared van service, which costs $23 (plus $12 for each additional passenger) but it takes 30-60 minutes longer as it drops off passengers around midtown Manhattan.

Driving Directions

433 West 22nd Street is located on the north side of 22nd Street (on your left as you are driving),
between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. Except for 23rd Street, nearby streets and avenues are all one-way, so you must approach 22nd Street by driving north (uptown) on Tenth Avenue. If you are driving south (downtown) on Ninth Avenue, turn right and go west on 21st Street, then right on Tenth Avenue, and then right again on 22nd Street. As they say, two wrongs don’t make a right, but three rights make a left.

If you are coming from east of Ninth Avenue, you should be aware of two more things.  First, left turns are prohibited from 23d Street eastbound onto Ninth Avenue, so go across to Ninth Avenue on 25th Street or further north.  Second, 21st Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues is closed from 8 AM to 3 PM on school days (Monday to Friday from September to June)

Once you’re here, you won’t need a car to get around the city. Off-street parking (indoor or outdoor) is available at several garages nearby.
